“Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson

I was looking for an engaging historical fiction novel to share with my students, and I think I found it! I appreciated that this novel takes an unusual look at children as slaves, as well as slaves in the Northern states. Also, this book is set during the American Revolution as opposed to the Civil War,as is often the case. The main character is dynamic and her story is action-packed, as well as poignant. I think middle school boys and girls will be engaged by this awesome tale.
It would make a perfect combination selection for sixth-seventh grade history and English co-teachers/team teachers.
